Question about free will

Since there have been quite a few comments recently I'll try take advantage.

How would you define free will?

I've found that people have opinions on whether we have it or not, but it's very difficult to articulate what it actually means.

I think by free will we mean that somehow our true inner self can make any choice and is not compelled to make one or the other.

However, our choices are either random (which is not very inspiring) or they are based on something, and that something could be emotional, intellectual, instinctual, our sense of right-or-wrong. But what drives these processes?

I can't get my mind around freewill!
